Fifth Session of the Human Rights Council
U.S. Statement on Lebanon
Delivered by Ambassador Warren W. Tichenor,
Head of Delegation
Geneva,
June 13, 2007
Thank you, Mr. President.
The United States remains concerned about the suffering of the
Lebanese people as a result of the conflict of last summer. We
have worked closely with the government of Lebanon, with major
donors, and with international financial institutions to provide
substantial resources to assist in Lebanon’s reconstruction.
The United States supports fully the Siniora government and the
people of Lebanon as they defend their democratic gains. The Lebanese
are making tremendous sacrifices for liberty, and we commend their
determination and will continue to support their search for a
free and peaceful country.
We reaffirm our commitment to the reconstruction of Lebanon and
to the building of a strong and secure Lebanese state for all
Lebanese people. In this regard, we commend the Council on its
work to promote and protect human rights and to advance the cause
of peace. We continue to believe that the path to peace in Lebanon
requires full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution
1559, including the disbanding and disarmament of all militias
on Lebanese territory. We call upon the Council to live up to
its mandate to promote and protect human rights and to advance
the cause of peace.
Thank you, Mr. President
