The European Union Extends Sanctions
to Uzbekistan
The United States welcomes the European Union's decision to extend
sanctions on
Uzbekistan. We share the European Union's concern about the human
rights
situation in Uzbekistan, and we will continue to cooperate closely
with it
directly and through the United Nations. Respect and dignity for
human rights
is essential for the future prosperity of the Uzbek people, and
a necessary
element of successful democratic reform.
We note the Government of Uzbekistan's proposal to engage with the
EU in a
regular dialogue on human rights, including discussing the Andijon
events. We
believe this dialogue must be results-oriented, with concrete and
effective
steps toward improving the human rights situation in Uzbekistan.
The United States urges Uzbekistan to engage in dialogue with the
European
Union and abide fully by its international commitments to continue
democratic
reform and respect human rights.
