Special Representative of the President for the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons


 

Jackie Wolcott Sanders was sworn in as Ambassador on December 16, 2003, and serves as United States Representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and as Special Representative of the President for the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Just prior to assuming this post and since 2001, she was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, with broad responsibility for foreign policy development and multilateral negotiations within the United Nations system.

Ambassador Sanders has had a 20-year federal government career, including nine years on Capitol Hill (Senate and House). She has held several positions relating to national security affairs, including: previous service as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (1990-1993); Associate Director for National Security in the Office of Presidential Personnel, The White House (1987-1989); White House Liaison for the Department of State (1985-1987); and Special Assistant for Congressional Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, Department of State (1984-1985).

Ambassador Sanders was also Vice President of the National Policy Forum, a think tank in Washington, D.C. She is a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and is married to R. Carter Sanders.
