We must never lose sight of the reality that trade has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, expanded individual opportunity, and contributed enormously to an acceleration of economic development across our planet.

Ambassador Kirk congratulated Minister Nabiullina on Russia’s landmark achievement in concluding negotiations on the terms of its accession to the WTO. Ambassador Kirk discussed the determination of President Obama to work with the U.S. Congress to enact legislation enabling the United States to fully benefit from Russia’s membership.

Ambassador Kirk thanked Minister Emerson for Australia’s commitment to a strong WTO and its constructive approach to the Doha Round of world trade negotiations, and for Australia’s leadership in fighting protectionist measures in global trade.

We believe that this institution and the multilateral trading system it upholds remain strong, and its value is fundamental to individual, national, and global economic welfare.

The United States today joined a number of WTO Members at the 8th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, in a Ministerial statement expressing continued support for an ambitious outcome on fisheries subsidies in WTO negotiations, and readiness to explore additional avenues for results even as an impasse continues in the Doha Round of world trade talks.

In an age when people and diseases cross borders with growing ease, bioweapons are a transnational threat, and the United States is taking steps to protect against them with transnational action. Along the margins of the BWC Review Conference, the U.S. Delegation hosted three events that provided an overview of the U.S. approach to several critical BWC areas.
