U.S. Highlights Importance of Space Situational Awareness

The United States government supports numerous multilateral and bilateral engagements in space situational awareness (SSA). For example, the United States is collaborating with our friends and allies in Europe as they consider developing their own SSA system. The State Department, in collaboration with Department of Defense, is currently engaged in technical exchanges with experts from the European Space Agency, the European Union, and individual ESA and EU Member States to ensure our existing and planned SSA systems contribute to a more comprehensive situational awareness picture to ensure the safety, stability, and security of the space domain. In addition, the U.S. Department of Defense has signed bilateral SSA statements of principles with Canada, France, and Australia.

First Session of BCC Began Discussion of Technical Issues Related to New START Implementation

From March 28 to April 8, 2011, the first session of the Bilateral Consultative Commission (BCC) on the new START Treaty took place in Geneva. In the course of the session the Parties began discussions on the technical issues related to the implementation of the Treaty. U.S. Government Humanitarian Assistance in Response to the Libya Crisis

The U.S. Government has provided $47 million to international and non-governmental organizations to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of people fleeing the violence in Libya. We have deployed a team of disaster response experts to the region, and are working closely with host governments, the United Nations, NGOs and other international partners to assess and address urgent humanitarian needs in Libya and neighboring countries. Our assistance is also reaching beneficiaries inside Libya, providing needed medical supplies and staff, pre-positioning and distributing emergency relief commodities, and supporting medical training for mass casualty care and transport.
